How sports experiences can be tranferred to the business world - Milan Krajnc

Today we look at life too fragmented, we have too much segmentation. If we only look at elementary school, we have biology, grammar, math, chemistry... but we study each subject matter by matter, we have to know the definitions, the formulas... there is not enough context.

And so, in early childhood, we begin to develop multiple personalities, in one person. We feel this especially when we find ourselves in situations countless times, when someone manipulates us, when we react slowly, when we just do not find ourselves, we still only think of problems. It may sound banal, but all too often we look at life in segments without realizing that we only have one head, one body and that WE are all everywhere.

Recently, I was appointed to one of the collective sports clubs, where the club had the goal to go from the second to the first league. They had a great start to the season and then lost a whole series of games. The players said they just did not see the motivation anymore, the more the coach told them they had every chance of getting into the first division, they had less willpower, they even said they
were aware of it, but there was simply nothing they could do about it. After a long conversation with all of them, I realized that they do not have a long-term strategy. The players were there during th transition from high school to college. Their way of life changed and they felt that they had left all their youth on the playground as if their life was running out, they just did not know how sport would benefit them in life.

As an introduction, I told them my story. In the past I was an active sportsman – runner, today I am an entrepreneur. When I started doing business, I had no business connections, no “godparents”, just an idea of what I wanted to do. I soon realized that the business market is a big hunting ground, that around me there are only hunters who survive on business opportunities, I myself had no experience, but I had to hunt as well as they did if I wanted to survive. At that moment I was aware that the rules are exactly the same as in sport, you have to have a plan and a clear goal that has to be measurable, you must not rush anything, you have to be disciplined, and when you are at your worst, you must not give up. when you overcome the crisis, you become better. And I applied exactly the same rules in the economy, so that in one year I became better than those who have been in this world for ten years. So, for the first time, I saw the useful value of sport in another field.

How to transfer experience from sports to the business world? Milan Kranjc

I slowly went over to them. So far we have been able to participate in the business world as individuals, but the financial crisis and market conditions have disarmed the lone fighters. Now comes the time of networking, when it will be necessary to put together teams of experts and lead them to a goal. And the one who knows how to connect people and lead them in the right way will be the new winner. And as a well-coordinated team you have already developed these skills, so you will have a great advantage over others, not to mention systematic work, discipline and perseverance. Of course, it is not only important to lead the team, but above all to find the right customers, those who will use your product. Often you will get into trouble or you will have difficulty reaching a particular potential customer, so you will need other personal connections. Most successful entrepreneurs were once successful athletes. Therefore it is very likely that you will meet your teammates in the business world. It is therefore important to make contact with athletes from neighboring clubs, even if you feel that they are your competitors, as they could be your allies in the future. Maybe you do not see the value of sport right now, but with sport you create the basis for a successful life.

Do not look two months into the future when you can play in the premier league, look a few years into the future.

The boys started to ask different questions and suddenly a conversation between them started, so we talked until late at night. Although it was a Friday and most of them would be in some kind of bar, they said in the end that it meant much more to them to talk. So they got the insight that the youth not only visit bars, but the emphasis is on making contacts everywhere. And so they had the feeling that friends could be off the field.

What have we really done?

The players lost contact with each other and did not see into the future why they were doing all this. There was no reason to change anything in training, they just needed to talk about something else, not just their discipline. In this way we added some value to sport and showed that sport is not just about competitions and victories, but that sport is a part of life and socialization.

We need to look at life in a more holistic way, so that we can see that we can connect individual segments, and at the same time we will become more holistic personalities. The more we are psychologically stable, the words problem, problem, we will not know more.

We often hear that sport has no limits. And it really does not, we can go anywhere with it, and we will meet like-minded people everywhere, maybe they will be the key people in the future when you build our company.
